ART BLOG #01

"Dear Mr. Mayor..."

It has been eight months since my last blog...

Self-Portrait. (slight color correction) 2016

ART:

Two years ago my Dad sent the city manager of San Antonio a 2x3 foot print of my San Antonio, Texas (Part One) "City Drawing." (What is a City Drawing? Well, check out this behind the scenes blog about my artistic process here: http://timothy-mcvain.blogspot.com/2014/11/my-art-and-city-drawings.html

Current progress of my "City Drawing" of Las Vegas, Nevada

(At the time, my parents were living in California but have since relocated to be near me here in the Alamo City) Approximately one month after sending the drawing to her, I received a letter from the city manager thanking me and my parents for my drawing. Months later, during a visit to San Antonio, my parents went to City Hall and met her and saw my drawing on display in one of the hallways. My Dad felt that my "City Drawings" were important and needed to be shared with more people so he sent large prints to the mayors of a few cities that I had drawn. I received letters of thanks from the mayors of San Antonio, Denver, Salt Lake City, the city manager of San Francisco, and the former mayor of Houston...

One year has passed since my Dad sent one of my drawings to a city and during my research and planning for my current "Las Vegas, Nevada" drawing, I realized I could use his formula and send prints of my work to the mayors of the other cities that I have drawn. (At the time of this writing, I have drawn more than twenty cities) I spent a couple days researching the mayor's names, addresses of the city halls, and read the background of each person. Then, I typed up a quick introductory letter about myself and the drawing, hoping that they would accept the gift of my art of their city, wrapped the print of their city's drawing, placed a business card and one of my brand new flyers into an envelope and sent them off to ten cities! I had assumed this would be a simple, hour long project but it became more than a week of working every day between when I slept and when I had to go to work. I will update here on a future blog post when I get a response.

The mayors I've shared my art with is as follows...

PHOTOGRAPHY:

I have become obsessed with color splash photos! Then, when I received a lot of love for my "color correction" pictures I decided to go back through my archives of tens of thousands of photos and begin re-editing them and changing the colors. I've especially fallen in love with turning iconic photos of mine yellow (blue, green, purple, or teal) in a series I've entitled "What if it was Yellow?" Below are some examples...

MUSIC:

So far, my www.soundcloud.com/timothy-mcvain has 16 original songs available and I hope to soon record professionally because at the moment I'm recording myself through my phone which I prop up on folded clothes stacked on a table next to my keyboard. My music is based on a lot of the storylines in my writing... see below

WRITING:

As some of you may know, writing has been a major passion of mine for years. Even as a child I would dictate to my Mom stories I thought of and then I'd draw them on the page. Thankfully my Mom has saved all the stories I have written and it's fun to look back and see what I was thinking as a kid and ideas I had in my very imaginative mind. I have a series of 7 fiction novels and one collection of short stories I'd like to self-publish, print, and promote/sell. This is a major life goal of mine and I don't have any idea when I'll finish them, but I'd like to at least get one published this next year... Any feedback/advice is much appreciated!
